More than 32 crore tourists arrived in UP in 9 months, these three cities were the most favorite destinations.

Uttar Pradesh is registering its strong presence on the world tourist map every year with new and historical records. While the number of tourists coming to UP in the year 2022 was 31.85 crore, in the first 9 months of 2023 itself, more than 32 crore tourists have visited. There are also a large number of foreign tourists in this. Most tourists in the state visited Kashi. The number of tourists coming to Prayagraj and Ayodhya was also in crores. The consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla is to be held on January 22 in the newly constructed grand Ram temple in Ayodhya. But before this, Ramnagari is being decorated. PM Modi has recently inaugurated the renovated railway station and new airport here, which is helping in increasing the connectivity of the entire region. Along with this, the foundation stone of Greenfield Township was also laid for infrastructure development in Ayodhya. Due to all these steps, tourism in Ayodhya is getting a huge boost, which is benefiting the tourism sector of entire Uttar Pradesh.
UP’s tourism sector had to suffer huge losses in 2020
If we look at the official figures released by Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, tourists are increasing every year in the state, which includes both domestic and foreign tourists. In the year 2017, a total of 23,75,33,823 tourists came to the state, of which domestic tourists were 23,39,77,619 while foreign tourists were 35,56,204. In the next year i.e. 2018, this figure increased by 21.60%. This year a total of 28,88,60,600 tourists visited the state, of which Indians were 28,50,79,848 while foreigners were 37,80,752. In 2019, there was a huge increase in the figures once again and this time 87.14% more tourists came to UP as compared to 2018. In 2019, a total of 54,06,00,343 tourists came to the state, of which 53,58,55,162 were domestic and 47,45,181 were foreign. The Ardh Kumbh held in Prayagraj in 2019 has been a major reason for this increase. Let us tell you that the Corona pandemic period of 2020 was a year in which the tourism sector of UP had to suffer a lot. Compared to 2019, this year 83.92% less i.e. only 8,70,13,225 tourists came to the state, of which Indians were 8,61,22,293 and foreigners were 8,90,932. With the relaxation of Corona restrictions in 2021, the tourism sector once again increased and this time 26.14% more tourists reached Uttar Pradesh as compared to 2020. A total of 10,97,53,172 tourists visited the state in 2021, of which Indians were 10,97,08,435 while foreigners were 44,737. In the year 2022, tourism in UP increased further and this time 65% more tourists reached the state. A total of 31,85,62,573 tourists came to Uttar Pradesh in 2022, of which domestic were 31,79,13,587 while foreign were 6,48,986.
Know here how tourists are increasing in Ayodhya
With the commencement of construction of Ram temple, the tourism industry of Ramnagari has also gained wings. The number of domestic and foreign tourists has increased rapidly. While the attraction has increased due to the beautification of Ramayana Circuit and Ghats, the Deepotsav on Diwali has also attracted the visitors. If we look at the figures for tourists in Ayodhya, a total of 2,84,299 tourists came to the city in 2017. In the next year i.e. 2018, this figure increased and 3,18,545 tourists reached the holy city. In 2019, 3,42,332 visitors came to Ayodhya. 2020 was the year when the city received the least number of tourists. Due to Corona restrictions, only 1,73,530 tourists could come here. Some relaxation in Covid rules was seen in 2021 and 2,83,208 people visited the city this year. 2022 was the year when the number of tourists coming to Ram Nagari increased suddenly. A total of 2,39,10,479 tourists visited the city this year, which includes 2,39,09,014 domestic tourists and 1465 foreign tourists.
Prayagraj is also attracting tourists
Prayagraj, one of the oldest cities of India, is also mentioned in ancient texts. This city is known as ‘Prayag’ or ‘Tirtharaj’. Prayagraj is situated at the confluence of three rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. The meeting point is known as Triveni and is very sacred to Hindus. Prayagraj hosts the Ardha Kumbh every six years and the Maha Kumbh every twelve years, the largest gathering of pilgrims on the planet. If we look at the number of tourists coming here, it was 4,18,74,662 in 2017. After this, in 2018 this figure was 4,48,15,467, in 2019 it was 28,52,28,710. Also, due to the Ardh Kumbh Mela in 2019, a tremendous increase in the number of tourists was seen in Prayagraj. Whereas 3,19,33,758 tourists came to Prayagraj in 2020, 1,12,13,496 tourists in 2021 and 2,55,17,007 tourists came to Prayagraj in 2022.
Tourists liked Varanasi very much
Varanasi or Kashi is one of the oldest living cities in the world. English writer and litterateur Mark Twain once wrote that Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend. The land of Kashi has been a place of ultimate pilgrimage for Hindus for centuries. The city has been a center of education and civilization for 3000 years. The place where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment is just 10 km away from Varanasi. Also a pilgrimage site for Jains, Varanasi is considered to be the birthplace of the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanath. Kashi, the city of Baba Vishwanath, is an important part of the tourist destination of UP and the scope of tourism has increased here too. In 2017, the total number of visitors to Varanasi was 62,82,063 with 59,47,355 domestic and 3,34,708 foreign tourists. After this, a total of 64,44,860 tourists reached Baba Ki Nagri in 2018, 67,97,775 in 2019 and 9,82,492 in 2020. A total of 30,78,479 visitors arrived here in 2021 and the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was inaugurated on 13 December this year. With the construction of the corridor, there was a tremendous jump in the number of people coming to Varanasi. In 2022, 7,12,31,051 people came to Varanasi, of which domestic tourists were 7,11,47,310 and foreign tourists were 83,741.
Tourists also came to Shri Krishna’s birthplace Mathura
Mathura is located 145 kilometers south-east of the national capital Delhi. Mathura was an important center during ancient times. According to Hindu scriptures, Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna in the center of Braj or Brij-Bhoomi. According to the epics Mahabharata and Bhagwat Purana, Mathura was the capital of the Surasana Kingdom, which was ruled by Shri Krishna’s maternal uncle Kansa. The number of tourists in the city of Lord Krishna has increased significantly in the last few years. 72,53,305 tourists had reached here in 2017. After this, 76,88,210 tourists visited in 2018, 82,69,835 in 2019, 13,70,972 in 2020, 54,38,762 in 2021 and 89,16,036 tourists visited here in 2022.
Tourists visit Taj Mahal in Taj city Agra
Agra is a major tourist destination due to its Mughal-era buildings, particularly the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is included in the Agra Golden Triangle tourism circuit along with Delhi and Jaipur. If we look at the figures of tourists coming to Taj city, there has also been a jump in it. In the year 2017, 1,02,69,006 tourists visited the city. After this, 1,06,28,435 tourists reached Shar in 2018 and 1,08,66,284 in 2019. During the Corona period, 26,97,145 tourists came in 2020 and 42,61,336 tourists came in 2021. Whereas in 2022, tourism of Taj city improved significantly and this year a total of 94,70,667 people visited the city.
