My shirt signed by Dhoni is still proudly kept in my house: Sunil Gavaskar – Dainik Savera Times

New Delhi: India batting great Sunil Gavaskar shared his admiration for former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and expressed his pride in owning a shirt signed by the iconic cricketer during last year’s IPL. Reflecting on his old Dhoni fandom, Gavaskar recalled the memorable experience of meeting MSD and cherishing the signed memento as a prized possession. Gavaskar said he has always been a fan of Dhoni and admires his style of play, his attitude and behavior on and off the field.

Gavaskar said at the Star Sports IPLOnStar event before IPL 2024, ‘I have been a fan of MSD ever since I saw him play for the first time. What else does a fan want? The fan wants to meet his hero and chat with him, try to get his autograph, even take a photo. Overall the team was roaming around the stadium (Chepauk) because they had to go somewhere else for the knockout matches, so I thought it was a good time to get his autograph, because I admire him a lot. I admire his cricket, his attitude, his behaviour. ,

Highlighting Dhoni’s exemplary conduct on and off the field, Gavaskar stressed the importance of role models in the game and praised Dhoni’s decency and honesty and revealed that he still proudly holds a shirt with the IPL on it. The signing was made by the CSK captain during 2023. Gavaskar said, ‘When you are a role model, you have the responsibility to behave well with everyone and be a good role model. And he is a very good role model. And the way he conducts himself with grace made me want to approach him. And requested him, and I’m very happy that he agreed to sign my shirt. That shirt is still proudly displayed in my home.

Apart from this, Gavaskar, who is currently doing commentary in Dharamsala for the fifth and final Test, is in a celebratory mood because on this day i.e. on March 7, 1987, the little master became the first cricketer to complete 10000 Test runs. In the commentary box, he celebrated the special moment by cutting a cake which was shared by BCCI on X, in which Gavaskar said, ‘I am thankful to BCCI for remembering this day… touching the 10,000 mark. Apparently, when I came to the comm box the statistics guy told me that that was the day I scored my first half-century in Test cricket. Thank you very much to BCCI for remembering this and honoring me with a wonderful, delicious cake.

He said, ‘Today is R Ashwin’s 100th Test match, it is a very special day not only for me or Ashwin but also for Indian cricket. I hope we finish this test match with another win. Overall, this great cricketer has scored 10122 runs in 125 test matches with the highest score of 256 not out. He has 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries to his name.
