The actor had recently expressed his concern over the popularity of films like ‘The Kerala Story’, ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’. In an interview, the actor talked about the changing trends in Bollywood. Naseeruddin, who was last seen in Taj: Reign of Revenge, is currently in the news for his directorial venture ‘Man Woman Man Woman’, which also stars his wife Ratna Pathak Shah.
In an interview with the Free Press Journal, Naseeruddin said that the popularity of films now seems to be driven by chauvinism, which he says is ‘very harmful’. He said, now the more chauvinist you are, the more popular you will be, because that is who is ruling this country. It is not enough to love your country, but to beat the drum about it and create imaginary enemies for you. What are these?” People don’t realize that what they are doing is very harmful. In fact, movies like ‘Kerala Story’ and ‘Gadar 2’, I have not seen them but I know what they are about. I am in.”
He further added that “It is disturbing that films like ‘Kashmir Files’ are so widely popular, while films made by Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha and Hansal Mehta, which try to depict the truth of their times, are Are there, are not seen. But it is important that these filmmakers do not lose heart and keep telling stories. They will be responsible for the future generation. A hundred years from now, people will watch ‘Bheed’ and they will also watch ‘Gadar 2’ and see which one portrays the truth of our times, because film is the only medium that can do that. It is difficult to resort to abstraction and capture life as it is. So regressive is too mild a word for what’s going on.
He further added, “It is appalling where filmmakers are being indulged in making films that glorify all the wrong things and put down other communities without any reason. It is a dangerous trend.”
Meanwhile, Naseeruddin has turned director again after a long gap of 17 years by directing a short film titled ‘Man Woman Man Woman’. The short film depicts the love and cooperation between two generations. The 26-minute film is written by Naseeruddin Shah and released on the official YouTube channel of Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films.
