New controversy in Indian wrestling: Wrestlers gathered against Bajrang, Sakshi and Vinesh

The ongoing crisis in Indian wrestling took a new turn on Wednesday as hundreds of junior wrestlers gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest against the loss of an important year in their careers and blamed top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat for it. Junior wrestlers arrived here in buses from different parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. Of these, about 300 were from Arya Samaj Akhara of Chhaprauli, Baghpat, while many were also from Virendra Wrestling Academy of Narela. The security personnel had a lot of trouble in controlling them. These wrestlers were raising slogans against Bajrang, Sakshi and Vinesh. They were holding banners on which it was written along with the photographs of the three wrestlers, “Sakshi, Bajrang and Phogat have ruined the country’s wrestling.”
Soon after the election of new office bearers of the Indian Wrestling Federation, it was decided to hold the National Under-15 and Under-20 Championships in Gonda, after which the Ministry suspended the Federation and these tournaments were also cancelled. Many of the performing wrestlers had a chance to play at the junior level for the last time. Muzaffarnagar Stadium coach Pradeep Kumar said, “More than 90 percent of the Akharas of Uttar Pradesh are with us in this protest.” On one side there are only three wrestlers and on the other side there are lakhs. They have ruined the careers of lakhs of wrestlers in the country.” He said, ”These people have no respect for national awards. Throwing them on the road.” Bajrang and Vinesh have returned their government honours.
Pradeep said, “They have been saying that their fight is for women and junior wrestlers but they have ruined careers worth lakhs.” His performance is to get the top position in WFI. Once this happens, all their performances will stop.” About a year ago, these three top wrestlers were sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar over allegations of sexual harassment against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. At that time, farmer groups, social workers, politicians, women’s organizations and wrestlers supported him. National camps and competitions have come to a standstill from January 2023. The WFI has been suspended twice and an ad-hoc committee is running the game.
Vivek Malik of Arya Samaj Akhara said, ‘An entire year of these junior wrestlers was wasted. The new WFI had taken the decision for the welfare of these wrestlers who could not even play district or state level competitions.” He said, ”The new federation was also suspended. It was elected as per the instructions of the court but it was not allowed to function. The suspension should be lifted and the federation should be allowed to function.” These protesting wrestlers have demanded that the suspended WFI be reinstated and the ad-hoc committee be dissolved.
