It is understood that Rana, who was the white-ball (limited overs) captain of the team till last year, did not like the responsibility being given to a season-old player Yash Dhull. Rana also has issues with some of the players in the Delhi dressing room and they include Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hrithik Shokeen, who has done commendably in red-ball cricket.
Shorey scored 859 runs in the last Ranji season. He was the fourth highest run-scorer in the tournament behind Mayank Agarwal (990), Arpit Vasavada (907) and Anushtup Majumdar (867) but Delhi could not qualify for the knock-out stage.
A DDCA director said on the condition of anonymity, “Nitish is upset as he was dropped from the red ball team and stripped of the captaincy. Shorey is miffed as the selectors had labeled him a red-ball specialist last season. That’s why they want to leave. Maybe Speaker Rohan Jaitley can talk to him. DDCA did not even stop Virender Sehwag from leaving the state.
It has to be seen whether DDCA offers Rana the allure of captaincy or not. Rumbling middle-order batsman Himmat Singh is expected to be handed the Ranji Trophy captaincy this season as most in the DDCA agree that the decision to hand over the captaincy to Dhull was taken in haste. Dhull had played only one first-class match so far.
Also, Dhull is on the radar of the national selection committee for India ‘A’ as he is on the NCA’s target list of players and has been called for the camp, which is why he will miss the Buchi Babu Trophy in Chennai. A senior DDCA official aware of the development said, “Dhull has been called for a camp at the NCA along with Navdeep Saini. He will not play in Buchi Babu Trophy. We are looking at Himmat as a possible captain. He is such a player who never runs away from challenges.
