Filmmaker Kumar Sahni, an important figure of Indian parallel cinema, passed away at the age of 83. He directed films like Maya Darpan, Chaar Adhyay and Kasba. Sahni’s close friend and actress Meeta Vashishtha said the director died in a hospital in Kolkata last night.

Vashishtha, who has worked with the director in ‘Vaar Vaar Vaari,’ ‘Khayal Gatha’ and ‘Kasba’, said he died due to age-related health issues at a Kolkata hospital at around 11 pm last night. He was ill and his health was deteriorating. This is a huge personal loss.”
The actress said, we were in touch with his family. Kumar and I used to talk a lot and I knew that he was ill and kept going to the hospital. Sahni is survived by his wife and two daughters. The filmmaker was born in Larkana, Sindh in undivided India. After partition in 1947, Sahni’s family came to Bombay (now Mumbai). Sahni studied at the Film and Television Institute of India with Mani Kaul. Sahni debuted in 1972 with Maya Darpan. Based on a short story by Hindi writer Nirmal Verma, the film revolves around a woman protecting her lover and her father’s honor in feudal India.
