The Nuclear Waste Adventure Trail is one of the most unique tourist attractions in the United States.
It is located in St. Charles County, Missouri, and is a part of the Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project.
This site was first occupied by an explosives factory and later a plant to refine uranium for nuclear bombs. In the late 1960s, the site was abandoned and all that was left was decades of industrial waste.
The site was home to 1.48 million cubic yards of nuclear waste, radioactive materials like asbestos, mercury, TNT, uranium and radium, and much more. It was a huge pile of mud and debris that should not have been left out in the open in the first place.
But how and where do you actually dispose of such large amounts of nuclear waste so that it doesn’t harm anyone? That’s when officials decided to leave the waste where it was, but safely away from anyone’s reach. The plan was to bury nuclear waste.
This site is spread over a total of 54 acres. Although officially called the Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project Disposal Cell, it is popularly known as the Nuclear Waste Adventure Trail.
What you see is a structure, a mountain of white, that looks like something that came from outer space. There is only one staircase that goes to the top. Believe it or not, tourists flock to climb this man-made mountain.
