Oscar Awards: From Gulzar to AR Rahman, these five Indians have won Academy Awards, see list

In 1983, Bhanu Athaiya created history by becoming the first Indian to receive the Academy. Bhanu Athaiya was awarded the Oscar in the Best Costume Design category for her work in the film ‘Gandhi’. He has also acted in other iconic films like Swadesh and Pyaasa. It was a historical drama based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Athiya wanted to be an artist, but later thought costume design was an option. In a career spanning almost six decades, Athaiya acted in 100 films.
Satyajit Ray is considered one of the best filmmakers of the country and was honored during the Oscars decades ago. Satyajit Ray was awarded the Academy Honorary Award in 1992 for his immense contribution to cinema. However, Satyajit Ray was ill and hospitalized in Kolkata, so he could not fly to Los Angeles for the ceremony. However, he gave a video message at the Dolby Theater after Audrey Hepburn announced the award. He described his work as “a rare mastery of the art of motion pictures and its profound humanism, which has had an indelible impact on filmmakers and audiences worldwide.”
Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was a drama based on the life of a street kid in Mumbai. It garnered attention at the 2009 Oscar Awards, earning nominations in eight out of ten categories. Indian sound designer Resul Pookutty was also among the winners. He won the award for Best Sound Mixing along with his British counterparts Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for his work on the film. Pookutty dedicated his award to billions of Indians and said, “I dedicate this award to my country. It is not just a nice award but a piece of history that has been handed over to me.”
AR Rahman also managed to create history, who is known as “Mozart of Madras”. At the 2009 Oscars, he became the first Indian to win two Academy Awards for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. He won Best Original Song and Best Original Song for the song “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire. Another song from the film, “O Saya”, also received a nomination in the Best Original Song category. AR Rahman made his debut in 1992 with Mani Ratman’s Roja for which he won the National Award. In a career spanning over three decades, he has composed music for Tamil and Hindi films and remains popular.
It was Pookutty and Rahman who grabbed attention at the 2009 Oscars. But veteran poet and lyricist Gulzar shared the Best Original Song award with Rahman. The lyrics of “Jai Ho” were written by Gulzar. A decade after winning the award, Gulzar said, “It was because of AR Rahman that the song won the award. However, Sukhwinder Singh also contributed to make the song a hit by putting a lot of energy in the song. Overall, I would say that we all agree that it was because of music maestro AR Rahman that this song won the prestigious award.
