National Games gold medalist Parvez Khan on Saturday became the first Indian athlete to qualify for the final of a track event at the US NCAA Championships. The NCCA, the most competitive college competition in the world, saw Parvez Khan reach the finals of the men’s one mile event in Boston.

Parvez Khan entered the finals of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships by finishing third in the preliminary race of one mile with a time of 3 minutes 57.126 seconds. The 19-year-old Indian was representing the University of Florida and had received a college scholarship there last year. Khan had won the gold medal in 1500 meters at the 2022 National Games with a personal best performance of 3 minutes 40.89 seconds in Gandhinagar.

The one mile event, however, is not so popular among Indian athletes and is not included in the Olympic and World Championship programmes. Three Indians, Tejaswin Shankar (high jump in 2018 and 2022), Mohinder Singh Gill (triple jump) and Vikas Gowda (discus throw in 2006) have all won gold medals at the NCAA Championships.

After winning the 800 meters gold medal in the Under-16 National Competition in 2019, Khan won the bronze medal in the same event in the Khelo India Youth Games (Under-18) the following year. He won his first senior race in 1500 meters at the National Open Championship in 2021. He won a silver medal in the 1500 meters event at the National Interstate Senior Athletics Championship in 2022 and a gold medal in the same distance at the National Open this year.
