Varanasi: Actor Ranveer Singh has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts to improve public infrastructure and develop Varanasi, one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the country. Ranveer and svelte Bollywood beauty Kriti Sanon were in the ancient temple town on Sunday and turned showstoppers for ace designer Manish Malhotra’s fashion show. On Manish Malhotra’s show in the city, which was themed ‘Banarasi Sarees – A Tapestry of Indian Culture and Craftsmen’, the actor said, “The show was amazing. The experience of ramp-walking on the banks of river Ganga felt a million times better than walking into a 5-star banquette in Mumbai. The event showcased the excellent craftsmanship of our weaving community.” Calling upon the youth to be conscious and aware of the country’s heritage while adopting modern trends and mannerisms, the eccentric actor said, “It is very important to be proud of the rich cultural heritage of our country. The best thing about Banarasi sarees is that the weavers weave only one kind of saree. It takes several days to weave one piece. This should be conveyed to the world.

Kashi is a very good example of Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi (progress while ensuring conservation of heritage). “Even after all the redevelopment of Kashi in the last 10 years, its soul is still the same.” Malhotra said that he has visited Varanasi many times and he likes the city very much. “I have visited Kashi many times and I love coming here.” He said that although he had met the weavers before, the idea of ​​doing a fashion show highlighting their exquisite hand-woven pieces had never occurred to him.

He said, “I had met weavers here earlier but had never thought of organizing a fashion show in Varanasi. Even after working for many years and organizing countless fashion shows, today’s event was amazing. I was very nervous backstage.” When asked what made the fashion show different from others, Malhotra said, ‘Usually the clothes I design are full of embroidery and sequins, but today the focus was not on them but on the craftsmanship of the weavers of Kashi.

I have always strived to take the local crafts of India to the world and will continue to do so in the future. We must take our handlooms and our artisans to the whole world. Manish Malhotra’s fashion show was part of a two-day event (April 13-14) organized by the Indian Minorities Foundation to promote handicrafts and handlooms of Varanasi.
