Box office collection
As per the initial estimates, the film earned around Rs 33-35 crore on the first day across all languages. The advance booking of the film was pegged at around 10 crores. However, due to the positive publicity many people are flocking to the theaters to watch the Mani Ratnam directorial. The first part of the installment earned around 327 crores in India and more than Rs. 169 crores ($20.70 million) overseas. The film’s global box office gross was around Rs 496 crore.
PS 2 marks Aishwarya and Vikram’s second collaboration after the 2010 film, which was also well received. The film stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha and Jayam Ravi in lead roles. Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Ashwin Kakumanu, Mohan Raman, Sarathkumar and Parthiban are part of the supporting cast. Composer AR Rahman, editor Sreekar Prasad and cinematographer Ravi Varman are part of the technical crew.
The second installment of Ponniyin Selvan is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name. It will begin with the finale of the first film, where the audience saw Ponniyin Selvan facing his death as Aishwarya Rai’s Oomai Rani jumps into the sea to save him. The film is bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
