Proposal prepared to nominate Puducherry in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Cities

UNESCO World Heritage Cities: The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is ready with its proposal document to add Puducherry to the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Cities. The draft is prepared as per the guidelines given by the agency.

The State Level Heritage Conservation Committee had proposed the application to UNESCO and the draft document has been prepared as per the guidelines of UNESCO.

According to Ashok Panda, co-convenor of the Puducherry chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), “Puducherry has already leapfrogged to achieve the status by reaching three milestones in the initiative. The government has notified a regulation for the protection of heritage sites and heritage complexes. It has also constituted a State Level Heritage Conservation Committee and proposed a second list of 118 private and 13 religious buildings to be notified as listed heritage buildings. This second list of buildings has been put in the public domain by the Puducherry Planning Authority for suggestions from the public till August 31, 2023.

Earlier, the first list of 114 heritage buildings in the boulevard were notified as protected structures: these included the historic Governor’s House, the old Court Building, where the President of India Draupadi Murmu stayed during her visit to Puducherry, and the police headquarters Are. Mr Panda pointed out that Puducherry must have “outstanding universal value” and fulfill at least one of the 10 criteria to be included in the tentative list.

So far, Ahmedabad and Jaipur from India have made it to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Cities. Delhi and Shantiniketan are still in the tentative list. According to an official, the Puducherry Planning Authority (PPA) is working on the heritage management plan in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and the work will be completed soon.
