Chandigarh: Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Sunday released the New Year calendar prepared by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University on the eve of New Year. Sports Minister said here today that all the award winning sportsmen and women players of Punjab have been included in this calendar. The Sports Minister released the calendar in the presence of Special Chief Secretary Sarvjit Singh and Vice Chancellor of Punjab Sports University, Lieutenant General (Retd.) J.S. Cheema.
On this occasion, the Sports Minister while congratulating all Punjabis and the sports world for the New Year said that Punjab has a rich sports heritage and Punjabi players have proved their mettle in the whole world. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government is making continuous efforts to bring back the state’s lost prestige in sports. In the very first year of the new sports policy, players from Punjab won a total of 20 medals including 8 gold medals in the Asian Games, breaking the 72-year-old record. He said that till now the players from Punjab have won four Padma Bhushan, 24 Padma Shri, four Khel Ratna. Awards, 129 Arjuna Awards, 15 Dronacharya Awards, 21 Dhyan Chand Awards and five Tenzing Norgay Awards.
All 202 award winners have been included in the calendar. Lieutenant General (Retd.) J.S. Cheema said that the unique aspect of the calendar is that the month of March, which is International Women’s Day, includes all the award-winning female athletes, and the month of May, which is World Athletics Day, includes all the awards. There are many award winning players in a family like father-son, two brothers, husband-wife, uncle-nephew etc. All these have been given a special place in the calendar.
