Chilean qualifier Christian Garin recorded his first win over a top-five player in nearly two years as he beat third seed Kasper Ruud of Norway 6-4, 7-6 (2) at the BNP Paribas Open tennis on Sunday. Garin, ranked 97, hit 39 winners (point-making shots) in Sunday’s round of 32 last round, while fourth-ranked Rudd hit just 15 winners in a match that lasted almost two hours. It was the 26-year-old Garin’s third win in four matches against two-time Grand Slam runner-up Rudd.
Garin will face either 13th seed Karen Khachanov or 23rd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the pre-quarterfinals. Cameron Norrie came back from 0-3 down in the first set to beat 103rd-ranked Taro Daniel 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-2. Nori, the 2021 champion, will now face the winner of the match between Andre Rublev and Ugo Humbert, seeded 10th. Alexander Zverev of Germany defeated Emil Rusvuori of Finland 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. In the next round, he will face either fifth seed Daniil Medvedev or Ilya Ivashka.
Third-seeded US top woman Jessica Pegula came from a set down for the second straight match to beat 26th seed Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.Seventh seed Maria Sakkari, ranked 27th Player Anhelina defeated Kalina 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Greek player will now face Karolina Pliskova or Veronika Kudermatova in the last 16. Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann, who defeated ninth seed Benilda Bencic in the second round, continued her winning run with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson to enter the last-16 for the first time.
