Rashi Khanna, the popular actress of South films, will soon be seen in the web series ‘Farzi’. In this, she will be seen sharing the screen with Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi. Last year, Rashi made her OTT debut with the web series Rudra, after which she got recognition in the Hindi film industry. Rashi does not see South and Bollywood industry separately. What was appealing about the web series ‘Farji’?
When I signed the show, I knew it has Shahid and Sethupathi sir. I found its story very interesting. I don’t think any show or film like this has come before. At least I haven’t seen it.
How do you see your character in the series?
My character’s name is Megha, who is not just a girl in this show. Many layers will be seen in this character. In this my character represents every girl who has to struggle more because of being a woman and it can be in any field. You will see my character, she is fighting, fighting. She is breaking the old made rules.
What kind of discrimination have you faced in your personal life?
A girl has to go through many types of discrimination right from the beginning. Whether we believe it or not, there is discrimination against women at every step, from school to the opportunities they get in the profession. We girls are constantly fighting this, but still it will take a long time to get everything right. Talking about the film industry itself, male actors get more money than us. They are treated differently on the sets. No one should be seen as biased. Many times during the audition I was told that you are beautiful, but you cannot be cast because you are an outsider. What will you do if the film flops? Here I say that if the selection is done on the basis of talent, then we outsiders should also get opportunities. It has been shown in this series that my character has to go through a lot of criticism. She also has her own little victories that every girl can relate to. I feel that after this show my fan following among women is going to increase.
What did Megha’s character teach you?
Megha is a little different from me. I usually surrender myself to the situation. Ok this is happening ok… Megha is a go getter. Whatever he wants, he wants it at any cost. He is very combative. Very passionate. I think these are the special things that I would like to learn from this character.
What preparations did you have to do for your role?
This show was like an exam for me. My character in the show can tell whether it is fake or real just by touching the paper of the note. How to recognize the real currency, what is the difference between a real note and a fake note, this nuance had to be learned. I learned many other things as well.
You had to audition for the show Rudra, did you clear the audition this time too?
To be honest, I signed ‘Farji’ first and ‘Rudra’ later. Mukesh Chhabra ji called me and said that there is such a role. He also fixed my zoom meeting with Raj and DK sir. I came to know later that he had seen an old audition of mine, which I had shot in Mukesh’s office, so he liked it very much. He said that this is my Megha, so seeing an old audition, Raj and DK thought that they had found their Megha. In this way, I have been lucky in terms of auditions. I get work through audition.
The stars of South are considered closer to the fans than Bollywood stars. what do you feel
Yes, but I cannot even tell the reason for this. By the way, because of this, one definitely gets to learn a lot from them. There is no paparazzi culture, so their entire focus is on their work. They don’t keep appearing everywhere. They do not pay attention to the look and clothes. The love of fans in South is not hidden from anyone. Super stars are also very responsible towards their fans. They definitely think about their fans before speaking and doing anything.
Most of the artists and technicians of this project are from South. Will you call it South Key Project or Pan India?
We were making in Hindi only, so there was only Hindi on the set. Used to talk to Raj sir in Telugu. She used to talk to Vijay sir in Tamil. I think it is more correct to say that this is an Indian film. We are unnecessarily dividing the industry, which is wrong.
Rajamouli sir himself said that his RRR is a Telugu film, not Bollywood?
If some people think so, then it is okay, but personally I do not believe in it. I think that leaving aside our individuality, we should talk about being united. Every project is Indian.
Fake means that which is not real. What do you think is fake about the glamor world?
I think social media is fake, everything else is subjective. Every actor is different. How much is real in front of people, how much is fake, that matter is subjective. I don’t take social media seriously.
You have two veteran actors with you in this series – Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi. How different are the two from each other?
Shahid’s wife Meera has studied in the same college, I have also studied from there. We both are good friends. By the way, I was nervous about shooting with Shahid. He is an amazing actor. They come on the set with full energy. On the other hand, Sethupathi is a very reserved person. Coming on the set, he discusses with Raj and DK sir for hours how to do this scene. He has given his own touch to his character, which is his most special thing.
This series will be of eight episodes
Before appearing in films, Rashi Khanna also did copywriting, singing, modeling for ad films. In the year 2013, she played the role of John Abraham’s wife in the film ‘Madras Cafe’. In the web series ‘Farzi’ directed by Raj and DK, Rashi will be seen in the role of Megha, a government official who is trying to root out the fake currency racket running in the country. This series of eight episodes is going to be released on Amazon Prime Video on 10 February.
