Mumbai: Whenever you hear about ‘botox’ and ‘fillers’, images of trout pouts and disfigured faces pop into your mind. Even though both treatments have become increasingly popular in recent years, I really don’t know much about them beyond these beauty misconceptions. Here we come up with 5 surprising facts about botox and fillers.

History:

Botox has a long history and many uses that people are often unaware of. It was first discovered in the 1820s, when Dr. Justinus Kerner discovered a toxin (botulinum toxin type A) in meat while investigating a case of food poisoning. Later, in the 1980s, an ophthalmologist used it to correct slanting eyes and realized that it corrected wrinkles in the process.

Use:

There are over 30 conditions that have been reported to benefit from botulinum toxin type A. It can be used to stop excessive sweating in the armpits, as well as prevent chronic migraines and treat overactive bladder – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Brand Name:

People refer to all adhesive bandages as Band-Aids, people refer to all anti-wrinkle injections as Botox because it is also a trademarked brand name. But generally speaking, Botox is one of many products that “contain a purified form of botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of wrinkles.” Dysport and Xeomin may be “equally effective”.

Difference between Botox and Fillers:

Botox and fillers are commonly thought of as the same thing, [लेकिन] This is not true at all! Botox is a muscle relaxant, while soft tissue fillers such as Restylane and Emeravel contain hyaluronic acid gel formulations. So, in short, Botox helps to relax the muscles in the face, whereas fillers literally ‘fill in’ and plump up the skin.

Temporary:

Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the targeted muscles of the face responsible for lines, causing the muscles to relax so that the skin over the muscles does not wrinkle. But it’s not a permanent solution: After a few months, the nerve heals when the Botox wears off, which means muscles start to move again and wrinkles appear.
