Actor Mangal Dhillon, best known for his stellar performances in TV serials ‘Junoon’ and Buniyaad, died on Saturday at Nilo Kalan village in Punjab’s Ludhiana district due to cancer. Dhillon’s family members gave this information. Dhillon (64) was admitted to a private hospital for treatment, but was brought home by family members a few days back, they said. Dhillon also acted in Hindi films like “Khoon Bhari Maang” and “Vishwatma”. According to Dhillon’s sister Ranjit Kaur, the actor died on Saturday evening at Neelo Kalan village.
Dhillon was born in Vander Jatana village in Faridkot district and later moved to Uttar Pradesh where his father had bought agricultural land. In his three-decade-long career, Dhillon gained popularity with roles such as Labhya Ram in Ramesh Sippy’s TV serial ‘Buniyaad’ (1986–87) and Sumer Rajvansh in the 1994 serial ‘Junoon’. He also showed his acting prowess in Hindi and Punjabi films. He was also honored by the Punjab government for his excellent performance in the film ‘Khalsa’. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal remembered Dhillon for his “powerful voice”. Badal wrote on Twitter, “Sad to know about the demise of Shri Mangal Dhillon, a renowned actor, writer, director and producer of Punjabi cinema.” He said, “It is a big loss for Indian cinema. His powerful voice and acting will be missed by many. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and fans.
Punjab Tourism and Culture Minister Anmol Gagan Mann also expressed grief over Dhillon’s demise at a press conference. Actor Yashpal Sharma said that the late actor had said goodbye to acting. Sharma said, “About a year and a half ago I came to know that he has become a motivational speaker. He was working for the betterment of the society.” Dhad actor Gulshan Devaiah shared Dhillon’s picture on Twitter and wrote with it a tribute to Mangal Dhillon. Dhillon is survived by a son and a daughter.
