RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi were the most-watched films during award season

SS Rajamouli’s RRR 2022 emerged as a sensational blockbuster and received tremendous critical acclaim. It was soon released on Netflix, which helped it become a global phenomenon.

Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, also performed well last year and opened to favorable reviews. It was also released on Netflix after its theatrical run. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has now praised these films. He said that RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi were discussed deeply during the award season.

In a recent interview to Economic Times, Ted Sarandos has said that RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi were watched a lot during the awards season. Every once in a while there’s an inflection point… a change in delivery or a change in storytelling, or a change in appetite. Being in Los Angeles during the award season, RRR and Gangubai were in the news. Everyone was talking about them… there were 180 movies to watch on the voting site and these two got a lot of views. He found out because… he saw them on Netflix.

He further added that RRR was the first Indian film which was seen by many international audiences. Those movies got pushed into Netflix culture and people started talking about hey, did you see this movie… did you see this movie. RRR for many people I know might be the first Indian film they have ever seen. For them, it was such a wild trip that they left wanting more.

RRR is an action drama starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan as parallel leads. It explores the friendship between their characters and their fight against oppression.

Gangubai Kathiawadi stars Alia Bhatt in the role of a brother madam. The cast includes Ajay Devgan and Vijay Raaz.
