RRR: Completed 200 days in Japan, earned 119 crores

SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which has been running uninterrupted in Japan since October last year, has now completed 200 days theatrically. It has grossed close to JPY 2 billion at the box office. The film, which released across 209 screens and 31 IMAX screens in 44 cities and prefectures of Japan, has also become the highest-grossing Indian film in the country.

Last month, the film registered a viewership of over one million in Japan. Rajamouli took to Twitter to thank the audience in Japan for their love. Now, the film has completed 200 days in the theater and is reportedly all set to break the JPY 2 billion club.

As per a report in Pinkvilla, the film has collected JPY 195 million (Rs 119 crore) at the end of its 29th week. Last December, RRR became the highest-grossing Indian film in Japan, surpassing Rajinikanth’s Muthu, which held the record for two decades. Muthu, which released 24 years ago, remains the highest-grossing Indian film of all time in Japan with box office collections of JPY 400 million.

In March, RRR became the first Indian film to win an Oscar in the Original Song category. At the Oscar Awards ceremony, Natu Natu was performed live and earned a standing ovation. Deepika Padukone started the performance and the audience applauded every time she mentioned the name of the song.

On winning the Oscar for Natu Natu, composer MM Keeravani had said in his acceptance speech, I had only one wish in my mind… RRR has to win… the pride of every Indian… and I must keep it to the world Top.

RRR is a fictional story set in the pre-independent era of the 1920s and is based on the lives of two real heroes and famous revolutionaries – Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. While Ram Charan played the role of Ram, Taarak was seen as Bhima. RRR grossed over 1200 crores worldwide.
