Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, rated Sam Bahadur 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote that it would be easy to describe Sam Bahadur as Vicky Kaushal. Because it is he who dominates every major scene of the film. But without the fine balance that Meghna Gulzar has struck between ambition and restraint, its emotional payoff would not have been as remarkable.
