Two months ago, Sanjay Leela Bhansali attempted to launch an international award campaign for his last film Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt.
Sanjay has worked as a screenwriter, music composer, editor and producer in a career spanning three decades. He has often received international recognition. His 2002 film Devdas was nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Foreign Language Film category after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Sanjay’s period film Gangubai Kathiawadi debuted at the Berlin Film Festival. The film then premiered on Netflix and became the first Indian film to feature in the Global Top 10 (non-English) in its first week.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is currently working on his most high-profile international project, the period drama series Heeramandi. In fact Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos flew down to Mumbai and held talks with Bhansali. The filmmaker will also be the producer of the anticipated sequel Rowdy Rathore 2.
