The incident at 1.30 pm on January 25
In the shared post, Ruchika Kapoor wrote, ‘A call was received at 1.30 in the night that our building was on fire. When we opened the main door, there was a plume of black smoke in front of us. Nothing was visible. It was impossible for us to get out of there. We had no choice but to wait. How long to wait? Do not know. I was horrified. I called Shaheer to tell him what happened. But took care not to panic. I didn’t want to put them in panic either.
Smoke was filling the rooms, Ruchika was scared
Ruchika Kapoor further wrote, ‘My father is on a wheelchair and remains ill. My daughter is 16 months old. I knew that it was impossible to get out of there, yet I could hear the voices of people asking me to get out quickly. It was difficult to get down from the 15th floor. We wet towels and put them under the doors of the house so that the smoke could not enter the house. But smoke was rapidly filling the rooms. Then a firefighter came and told us to wet napkins and put them on our noses so that we don’t faint. He told us that they are trying to douse the fire. It is a matter of some time and till then they will be taken out safely.
Shaheer Sheikh ran to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher
‘While down below, Shaheer along with the rest of the boys were pushing the vehicles to another place so that space could be made for the fire engine. Neighbors called me and told me that Shaheer himself had come upstairs with a fire extinguisher and tried to douse the fire. Later came the fire extinguishers. Finally at 3.30 Shaheer, my brother-in-law and 4 fire fighters came to us. This was probably the first time we encountered such a situation. First we took out mother and daughter Anaya. Then Shaheer and brother-in-law took my father down 15 floors on a wheelchair. By then it was 5 in the morning. I am thankful to all the fire fighters who saved us. I am very happy that Anaya and I had made up our mind to spend this weekend with our parents. Because I shudder to think what would have happened if we were not there? What Shaheer did for us seems like a scene from a movie.
