Looking at films and series like ‘Vikram Vedha’, ‘Mission Majnu’, ‘The Great Indian Murder’, ‘Shivshastri Balboa’, ‘Asura’, ‘Scam’, ‘Afwah’, ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, it seems Is the fair of your films going on?
To be honest, this fair was not pre-planned. Some of these things happened in lockdown, while some projects were shot in the year 2022. They’re all coming together, so every month something or the other is releasing in that circle. I am very happy. I had a special appearance in my latest film ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, despite this, the amount of love I have got from not only the public but also the critics, is a great pleasure for me.
Your film ‘Filmistan’ won the National Award, your work was appreciated, but then your career did not benefit much from it, why?
– Yes, I also thought that there was a huge explosion. Got many awards too. After that I also signed some good films. There were 2-3 such films which were of very big banners. There were some in which I had strong roles, but then it so happened that the shooting of some films did not even start. Some stopped in the middle, some got stuck. Then such a time came that the work stopped getting, the shortage of money started. I was spending my days in poverty after tasting success. For three years I was in a very bad condition. When did an independent film ‘Ullu’ come, when did it go, it was not even known. ‘Nakkash’ came, no one saw that too. Finally ‘Family Man’ changed my days. After that the series continued.
What was the toughest phase of the struggle for you?
The biggest problem with me was that I decided very late that I want to get into acting. At the age of 30, I quit my job and decided to enter the field of acting. I was married, had a child. I’ve seen bad times outside. There was a time when it was not known from where the food would come the next day. I had demanded as much money from all the people I could. Once I was sitting outside a mall and staring at my phone thinking whom should I ask for money today? (His voice gets choked while saying this) Then I took out the diary and started thinking that who is there, from whom I can ask for writing work. I dialed 2-3 numbers and then I called Vaibhav Modi, a friend of mine from MTV. I told him, money is needed a lot, get some work done. Luckily he was doing a show for NDTV Imagine called ‘Jor Ka Jhatka’ and for that he needed a writer. They immediately called me the next day and also gave me a signing amount. With that money I got ration and water for three to four months.
What was your biggest strength during that period?
My wife Nasreen has been my biggest strength. He supported me at every step. When I decided that I wanted to try my luck in acting, at a time when everyone was against my decision, only my wife supported me. He sold his jewelry to run the house in bad days. I bought a house while working, but when I sold it after joining the acting field, they didn’t even bother. He said that at least I should try, otherwise I will regret for the rest of my life why I did not try my hand at acting. My family and friends were very supportive. I am also a very positive person. My passion for acting never let me down.
Your father ZS Johar was an entertainment journalist. How much benefit and guidance did you get from him?
I turned to acting only because of him that he was a journalist in the acting world. I used to go to film parties with him. We used to live in a chawl and at that time big stars like Raj Babbar, Anupam Kher and Govinda used to come to our house. My chest used to swell with pride when people used to say, film stars come to the house of Lucky (his pet name). Since then it was in my mind that I want to become a star when I grow up. Actually my father only wanted me to become an actor when I grow up, but I felt that my personality was not of that type. I wanted to be associated with this industry. So I worked as an assistant director on Hum Tum Pe Marte Hain. Then I became a writer, but by the time I entered acting in 2009, my father had passed away. Ever since I started getting some success, I remember him every moment. Had he been alive today, he would have felt proud the most.
What was the most difficult period of life for you?
There have been many difficult times in my life. One was the period when I was not getting work and I was drowning in debt. But meeting ‘Family Man’ was the turning point for me. On one hand we were shooting for ‘Family Man’ and on the other my wife was diagnosed with cancer. Should I call it my good luck or bad, on one hand I started getting work and on the other my wife’s cancer started. Think for yourself, if he had cancer and I had no money and no work, how would I be able to get him treated? It is the irony of my fate that I got a job and did not have to ask anyone for money for treatment. She has been diagnosed with cancer four times and has been a strong cancer survivor. He has had many surgeries. His will power is very strong. We don’t manage her, she is managing us.
Exclusive: Huma Qureshi doesn’t know how to cook while doing Tarla Dalal’s biopic, watch her funny interview
There is a lot of buzz about your upcoming film Tarla on OTT?
‘Tarla’ is very close to my heart. As you know Tarla is based on the life of well-known home chef Tarla Dalal. I am playing the role of Tarla’s husband Nalin Dalal in this film. I cried a lot during the narration of this film. This is the first time in my career that I have cried while listening to the narration of a character. The look of this character is inspired by my father and this role is a kind of tribute to my father. Beautiful story, I am glad that I am getting a chance to work with Huma Qureshi in this. I am very excited about the film.
