Shilpa Shetty acquitted after 16 years in Richard Gere Kiss case

Shilpa Shetty, who recently featured in the Kannada film KD – The Devil, has got relief in the court case against her since 16 years. The sessions court on Monday dismissed the petition filed against the order acquitting Shilpa Shetty in the case. Shilpa was kissed by Hollywood actor Richard Gere in 2007 during a public event. After which Shilpa Shetty was accused of spreading obscenity at a public place. Now after years, in this case, the court has absolved Shilpa of the crime.

Extra Sessions Judge S.C. Jadhav has rejected. However, complete information is not yet available. This incident took place in 2007 when Richard Gere attended an AIDS awareness program organized in Rajasthan, during which he kissed Shilpa in front of everyone on the stage itself, after which voices were raised against this incident from many parts of the country. People called it obscene and an insult to the country’s culture.

After this, two cases were registered against Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty in Rajasthan and one in Ghaziabad. In Rajasthan, a case was registered in several sections under the Indian Panel Code and Information Technology Act. After this, Shilpa filed a petition to transfer the cases to Mumbai. In the year 2017, after the order of the Supreme Court, this case was transferred to Mumbai.

In January 2022, the magistrate’s court acquitted Shilpa Shetty of the charge, noting that she appeared to be a victim of Richard Gere’s act. When the incident took place, there were reportedly nationwide protests against both the actors and their effigies were also burnt on the streets.
