New Delhi: Indian women’s hockey team head coach Yanek Shopman resigned from her post on Friday, days after creating a stir by claiming that she was not given respect and importance by the national federation. The Dutch coach replaced Sword Marine in 2021, who led the team to a historic fourth place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.
Shopman’s contract was due to expire in August after this year’s Paris Olympics. But after her recent critical comments, it was expected that she would not continue in the post. The 46-year-old coach submitted his resignation to Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey after the team’s campaign ended in the domestic leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League in Odisha, Hockey India (HI) reported.
“His resignation following the disappointment in the recent Olympic Qualifiers paves the way for Hockey India to find a suitable head coach for the women’s hockey team that will be competing in the next Women’s World Cup in 2026 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” Hockey India said. Shopman, during a ‘mixed zone’ conversation at a Pro League match in Odisha, had claimed that Hockey India gives less preference to the women’s team coach than the men’s team coach.
He had said, “In the last two years I felt quite alone. I come from a culture where women are respected and valued. I don’t think so here. However, Hockey India had denied this. The Indian team has performed well under the guidance of Shopman, during which the team won 38 out of 74 matches, drew 17 and lost 19.
Under his guidance, the team’s best performance was the title win in the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy. However, not being able to qualify for the Paris Olympics was the biggest disappointment.
