NCA had advised Iyer to play Ranji, so that his back could get used to batting and bearing the stress on the field for about four days.
Iyer did not leave any mark in the first two Test matches against England. He scored 35 and 13 in Hyderabad. Then, could only score 27 and 29 runs in Visakhapatnam. In his last seven Test matches, he has scored only 187 runs at an average of 17, with his highest score being just 35.
In the Ranji Trophy, Iyer scored 48 in Mumbai’s ten-wicket win over Andhra in preparation for the England Test series, but did not play the final round of the competition after being dropped from the Test squad.
