Bangalore. On his return to the Indian cricket team ahead of the Asia Cup, right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer recalled his back injury phase, saying it was very bad and painful.
Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of India’s fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Ahmedabad in March this year after re-injuring his lower back.
That injury previously ruled Iyer out of the white-ball series against New Zealand at home as well as the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Nagpur.
Iyer said, “To be honest, it is a pleasure to join the team and see happy faces all around. The joy shown by all the players was fantastic and I feel good to be back.”
Iyer said in a video posted on bcci.tv, “It was terrible and to be honest, I was in a lot of pain. I could not express myself properly what I was going through.” .But that’s the feeling I was having at that time and it was hard to talk to everyone. I had this problem for a while but I was taking injections and going through different methods to make sure I Stable and playing many more matches.”
The Kolkata Knight Riders star underwent lower back surgery in the UK in May after being ruled out of IPL-2023.
Recalling the phase after surgery, Iyer said, ‘After the surgery, the surgeon also said that it was a very good decision that you decided to undergo surgery. After the surgery, I was in London for three weeks, as the doctor had to check on my recovery for some time.
Iyer then reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation and recovery from back surgery.
In a recent social media post, Iyer expressed his gratitude to NCA Sports Science and Medicine head Nitin Patel as well as strength and conditioning coach S Rajinikanth.
Iyer is training with the Indian team in a six-day camp before leaving for Colombo for the Asia Cup. His return also means that he will continue to occupy the crucial number four slot, a position where he averages 47.35 and has a strike rate of 94.37, which will come as a huge relief to the Indian team.(IANS)
