Mumbai India middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will play for Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Andhra Pradesh, which will be played from January 12-15 at the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy Ground, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.

41-time Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai started the 2023/24 season of the tournament with an impressive win over Bihar by an innings and 51 runs at the Moin Ul Haq Stadium in Patna, earning seven points from the win.

Iyer’s availability for the Ranji Trophy match against Andhra comes after he was not selected for India’s upcoming three-match T20 series against Afghanistan starting January 11 in Mohali. The right-handed batsman had an unimpressive time in the Test series in South Africa, scoring 31 and 6 in Centurion, followed by 0 and four not out in Cape Town.

Iyer last played a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai in 2018 and the match against his hometown Andhra Pradesh gives him the necessary red-ball game ahead of India’s five-match Test series against England starting on January 25 in Hyderabad. Time will be available, for which the team is expected to be selected in the coming days.

Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai will be without batsman Sarfaraz Khan and fast bowler Tushar Deshpande as the pair will field for India ‘A’ in the two-day practice match and first multi-day match against England Lions in Ahmedabad from January 12.

Fast bowler Sylvester D’Souza and opening batsman Amogh Bhatkal have been included in the Mumbai team, which will be captained by Ajinkya Rahane, who missed the opening match against Bihar due to a stiff neck. On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh will go into the match against Mumbai with three points after taking the first innings lead against Bengal in Visakhapatnam.
