New Delhi: Now the dream of supplying blood through drones across the country may soon become a reality. A senior officer gave this information. The Indian Council of Medical Research on Thursday successfully tested the delivery of blood bags through drones under its ‘i-Drone’ initiative. The initiative is part of a national drive to expand the drone ecosystem in India. ICMR first used ‘iDrone’ during the Kovid-19 pandemic to deliver the vaccine to remote areas.
Dr Rajeev Behl, Director General, ICMR said, ‘Today, we are sending blood and blood related products which are kept at low temperatures. After this experiment, we found that not only could we maintain the temperature, but there was no damage to the products. “We sent another sample through an ambulance and if there is no difference between the samples sent using both the methods, then drones will be used across India,” he said. Behl said, “India achieved 90 per cent coverage within 1 year due to digitization, effective manufacturing of vaccines and development of quick supply system.
The joint efforts of ICMR, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi, Government Institute of Medical Sciences, Greater Noida and Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, Noida have been successfully tested for the first time in the country. According to an official statement, the drone carried 10 units of blood between the Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Lady Hardinge Medical College as part of the test. Some countries, including Ghana and the US, are already using drones to deliver blood, vaccines, medicines, medical supplies and sometimes human organs to rural and remote areas.
