Mumbai | The Ajay Devgn and Tabu-starrer ‘Shyam’ franchise is set to cross country boundaries. An official remake will be made for the South Korean audience, with changes made to suit the film there. ‘Drishyam’ is an Indian franchise which has achieved success in every Indian language, be it Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu or Hindi. The announcement was made on Sunday at the India Pavilion of the Cannes Film Festival.
Indian production company Panorama Studios and Anthology Studios, founded by Jay Choi, former local Korean head of Warner Bros., have partnered with “Parasite” actor Song Kang-ho and acclaimed director Kim Ji-woon for the Korean remake.
The first part of ‘Drishyam’, directed by the late Nishikant Kamat, revolves around Vijay Salgaocar, whose ordinary world shatters after an accidental death, including his family and his desperate measures to save him from the law. The film was a huge success with commendable performances by Ajay Devgan, Tabu and Kamlesh Sawant.
Producer Kumar Mangat Pathak said, I am excited that the ‘Drishyam’ franchise is being made in Korean. For the first time a Hindi film is going to be made in Korean. This will not only increase its reach outside India but will also put Hindi cinema on the global map. Over the years, we have been inspired by the Korean style, now they have found inspiration in one of our films. What can be a bigger achievement for the Indian film fraternity.
Jay Choi is also excited about this collaboration. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to remake a massively successful Hindi film while retaining the originality of Korean cinema. The remake has more significance as the first major co-production between Korea and India. Through our partnership, we will be able to bring to the screen the best of both Indian and Korean cinema and create a meaningful remake that is as excellent as the original.
Stating that the film will keep the audience hooked with its twists and turns, Kumar Mangat Pathak exudes confidence that the ‘Drishyam’ franchise will find an audience in Korea (and the rest of the world) as well. He concluded, adding that this is the beginning of a valuable cultural exchange between the two countries and their film industries.
