New Delhi: Former India coach Ravi Shastri says that Virat Kohli should lead the Indian team if Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to injury or any other reason.
It is noteworthy that Kohli was captaining the team on India’s tour of England in 2021, but India had to return home after four matches of the five-match Test series with a 2-1 lead. When the fifth match of the series was played in 2022, India’s captain was Rohit but due to his injury, Jasprit Bumrah captained the team for one match.
According to Shastri, Kohli should have been appointed India’s captain for that one match. Shastri said on a program of ESPN Cricinfo, when Rohit was injured, I felt that Kohli would captain. If I was the coach, I would have made Kohli the captain. I am sure Rahul would have done the same, I have not spoken to him yet.
I would advise the board that Kohli should be given the captaincy as he was the captain even when India took a 2-1 lead. Kohli is currently leading Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023 while Faf is the full-time captain of RCB. Du Plessis is suffering from a rib injury. After the conclusion of IPL, India has to face Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Shastri wants Rohit to be fit for the WTC final but if he doesn’t, he would like to see Kohli don the captain’s coat.
Shastri said, I want to see Rohit fit for such a big match. He is the captain. But god forbid some unforeseen circumstances come up so definitely I will look at Kohli. Shastri also said that Kohli is looking very calm in IPL 2023.
