Sunny Deol has once again spoken openly about his struggle with dyslexia. In a recent interview, he revealed that he used to take his dialogues in Hindi for any film and practiced it many times. He also said that many people thought he was a ‘duffer’.

Sunny Deol opens up about his struggle with dyslexia

In a recent interview with Bombay Times, Sunny Deol opened up about playing characters inspired by real life. Revealing that his character in ‘Border’ was based on a real person, he said, “If you are playing a biographical character, it is different, but still, in a film like Border, where I played Brigadier Kuldeep Singh When I played Chandpuri’s role, I did not copy him. I understood the soul of the character and did it in my own way. It is not that I researched how he walked, what did he do (how he walks and what Does). When I am doing a film, I don’t even have dialogues.

Then he said, “I am dyslexic, so I cannot read and write properly and this has been my problem since childhood. At first, we didn’t know what it was, and people thought it was a duffer. I always find my dialogues in Hindi and I take my time to read it. I read them many times and made them my own. This is my preparation for this role.”

Earlier, in an interview with Ranveer Allahabadia, Sunny Deol had opened up about dyslexia and said, “I was dyslexic as a child. At the time, we didn’t even know what it meant! Thappad padte the, dafar hai, padhai nahi aati (I used to be slapped, called dafar because of not being able to study). Even now when it comes to reading, sometimes words seem confused. Often people (in public meetings) ask to use teleprompter but I refuse! I say, ‘You tell me what to say, I’ll try to say it.’

Sunny Deol feels research actors do ‘meaningless’ work

In the same interview, Sunny Deol said, “Father (Dharmendra) used to do two-three shifts, sleep for a few hours and do films back-to-back. Let someone try this today. All this research that actors do, I find it all nonsense. Keeping this (time spent doing it) in mind, all our films had to be great. At that time, what research did the actors do? But he still played his characters beautifully. The characters were based on real life and real emotions.
