On 8 May, the film The Kerala Story, which suddenly went viral in West Bengal, was banned in the state. The same situation happened in Tamil Nadu where cinema halls refused to screen the film. Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the producer of The Kerala Story, had filed a case in the Supreme Court regarding this matter, hearing which the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Government of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, asking that when The Kerala Story film is running in the whole country. So what is your problem here?
The makers of the film filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the ban. Hearing this, the court said – West Bengal is not different from the country. When the film is running peacefully in other states of the country then why is the film banned in Bengal and Tamil Nadu. It should be left to the audience whether they want to watch the film or not. The Supreme Court said that the geographical location of both the states is similar to other states, then why the film is not being allowed to run there. This case is about the freedom of art. Now the matter will be heard on Wednesday.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked Tamil Nadu government’s Additional Advocate General Amit Anand Tiwari – We want to ask you what steps you have taken to maintain law and order in the state. The state government cannot say that we are taking any other route (stopping the screening of the film). Theaters are being attacked, chairs are being burnt. It was your responsibility to maintain the security system.
Arguing on behalf of the production team of the film, Harish Salve said while cross-examination – the film was banned in Bengal without any problem. There the film ran peacefully for three days after its release. The same situation prevailed in Tamil Nadu as well, where a partial ban has been imposed on the film.
On the other hand, Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is appearing on behalf of the Bengal government, said that the state had received a report from the intelligence that if the film was screened, there could be a problem regarding law and order in the state.
