New Delhi. India and Mumbai Indians batsman Suryakumar Yadav will miss the opening matches of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he failed to clear the fitness test and did not get clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
A source close to Suryakumar Yadav’s case at the NCA told IANS, “He failed to pass the fitness test on Tuesday. We will conduct another fitness test for him on Thursday and if he passes, only then he can play in the IPL.
Mumbai Indians will play their first match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 24 and Suryakumar is unlikely to feature in that match.
Suryakumar, 33, has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury during the South Africa tour in December 2023. The Mumbai Indians batsman had gone to Munich, Germany for surgery in January.
At Mumbai Indians’ pre-season press conference held in Mumbai on Monday, head coach Mark Boucher said that he is still awaiting an update on Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness from the Indian team management.
“So, Surya is also under the guidance of the Indian cricket team at the moment. So we are just waiting for an update on that. I don’t like micro-management. We have a world-class medical team and he is in control of all of them. Yes, we have been hampered by some fitness issues in the past.
