New Delhi, 5 December (Hindustan Reporter). Following torrential rains in Chennai and neighboring districts due to Cyclone Michong, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday postponed the Formula 4 Night Street Race scheduled to be held on December 9 and 10 in Chennai.
As officials and staff from various departments of the Greater Chennai Corporation and the state government were involved in the rescue and relief operations, the Formula 4 Night Street Race was postponed, an official release said.
The circuit built for the race passes through a section of Kamarajar Salai via Flag Staff Road and then Napier Bridge, then joins a section of Anna Salai before taking a turn into Shivanandam Salai and then back to Flag Staff. Connects to the road. Pit stops for the race were planned inside the island grounds.
Earlier in the day, three PILs filed against the proposed holding of the Formula 4 Night Street Race in Chennai on December 9 and 10 were dismissed by a first division bench of the Madras High Court led by Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangapurwala and Justice R. Mahadevan.
It is known that when the matters were listed on December 1, a bench led by Justice Mahadevan had got an MoU signed between the Tamil Nadu government and the private entity, Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd, to organize the race. The judge wanted to know whether the State Government would get any revenue from sponsorship, broadcasting rights etc. for the events being organized by the private company on the Madras Street Race Circuit being set up on public roads around the island.
On December 2, opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had criticized the organization of the race. Palaniswami said the government has decided to spend Rs 42 crore on road expansion and repair works to host the Formula 4 night street race, while Irungattukottai in Chennai already had a track to hold the race.
