New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh said that he aims to convert the bronze medal of the Tokyo Olympics into a gold medal in the upcoming Paris Games.

The record eight-time gold medalist Indian team came back from 1-3 down in the bronze medal playoff in Tokyo in 2021 to defeat Germany 5-4 and end its 41-year Olympic medal drought.

India last won an Olympic gold medal in the 1980 Moscow Games. Commenting on India’s draw for the Paris Olympics, Harmanpreet said in a Hockey India release: “Winning the bronze medal in Tokyo was a memorable moment and we are determined to carry the same momentum to the Paris Olympics. Our aim is to improve the color of the medal and turn it into a gold medal. ,

“Initially our focus will be to take one step at a time, progress from the group stage to the next round and ensure a place in the quarter-finals,” he said. We are confident that we are a strong contender for a podium finish with our experience and skills. ,

The world number four Indian team will start its campaign against lower ranked New Zealand on July 27, after which the team will face Argentina on July 29, Ireland on July 30 and then Belgium on August 1. The team will face Australia in the final group stage match on August 2.

Harmanpreet said about the matches, “It will be challenging to compete in Pool B as every team has the potential to emerge victorious on any day. “But we are mentally and physically prepared for every challenge during our journey to the Paris Olympics,” he said.
