Durga Verma, operator of Sujata Cinema, has been serving in Sujata Cinema for the last 34 years. Has been a witness to the screening of Amitabh Bachchan’s films. He tells in his memoirs that Sujata Cinema opened in 1974. Movies used to run regularly, but since Amitabh Bachchan’s films started coming in theatres, people’s craze for films increased further. No other film was shown before his films. He was very popular among the audience. The crowd in his films was such that we had to inform the police station first. At that time, 60-70 staff had to be deployed to control the crowd. At that time 70 staff worked in Sujata. At that time it was common to get tickets in black. Everyone used to reach the cinema hall to watch his films. Amitabh’s craze used to be different. No other hero could survive in his era. From 70’s to 90’s, there was only Amitabh’s market.
People would reach home to get tickets
Deepak Kumar Chaudhary, manager of Plaza Cinema, says that Plaza Cinema opened in 1970-72. Then came the era of Amitabh Bachchan also. Whenever Amitabh’s film was shown in the plaza, there were long queues till the road. The ticket counter opened at ten o’clock, so people started lining up from eight in the morning. The tickets of his films were sold in black, the situation was such that people used to reach the ticket checker’s house a day before to get the tickets. There was a lot of craze among people to watch the first show of Amitabh’s films. People first wanted to see his first show. There was such joy on getting the ticket, as if they had got something very big. I have been the manager of Plaza Cinema since the beginning, so people used to know my house and reach my house to buy tickets.
