The experience of shooting Gadar as a child artist was shocking for me, says Utkarsh Sharma

Gadar 2 is going to hit the theaters this Friday i.e. 11th August. Utkarsh Sharma also has an important role in this Sunny Deol starrer film. He was seen in the role of a child artist in Gadar, in Gadar 2 he will be seen as a young artist. Excerpts from a conversation with Urmila Kori on memories of Gadar and expectations from Gadar 2

What is your reaction on the first day booking of the film?

It’s very good. Ever since the trailer launch of the film, tremendous enthusiasm has been seen among the people about the film. From industry to common people. Very good response has been seen even after the booking has started. I think it is very good for the whole industry.

Gadar 2 seems to have the upper hand in its clash with OMG 2?

Even if there is a clash, it will not matter because the audience of both is completely different. Gadar and Lagaan came together and both went away. Now Oppenheimer and Barbie also worked. I think this adds to the atmosphere of watching the film. Right now the industry needs both the films to run.

Will you be benefiting from the success of Rocky and Rani’s love story, as audiences have started flocking to theatres?

After the lock down till now cinema is being reborn in a way. We would like to be a part of it too. Before the lockdown, romantic comedy films which were ending in a way from Bollywood. They are over in American cinema. There romantic comedy films with big actors are not made these days. Rocky and Rani were made and people are liking them. This is a very good thing. Viewers are coming to the theaters to watch those films, which were the bread and butter of this industry. Everything is going well and great.

What is your opinion on the discussions about Gadar 2 earning more than Pathan’s collection?

I want this film to settle in the hearts of thousands of crores of people. There can be no greater victory than that. He cannot measure any money. Gadar film Gadar is made only when you live in the hearts of people.

How difficult was it to get into Jeete’s character after 22 years?

It was filled with a lot of emotion, because the character of Jeete was one of the popular characters of Gadar. When he was a child, he went on doing whatever he liked at that time. This time also the effort was to play this character from the heart. This time my character is of 20 to 22 years of age, so there is a boyishness in him, which puts him in different things as well, due to which there are many twists in the story. End turn comes.

The story is based in the 70s this time, so did any special preparation have to be done?

This character is Punjab based, so had to work on Punjabi language. Pakistan is also a part of the film, so work had to be done on Urdu language as well. Apart from this, to understand the atmosphere of 1971, also read some history books. Talked to the people of that era, who would have been 18 to 20 years old at that time. In the dressing of this film, you will get to see a glimpse of the actors of that era. Although it was not easy to shoot the 70s on screen. Today everyone has a phone in their hands. There are mobile towers everywhere. There is AC in every house. Making a Gadar forest was easy. In Gadar 2, a lot of care had to be taken of these things.

This is your father Anil Sharma’s film, were you responsible behind the camera as well?

There is an unspoken professional boundary between my father and me on the sets. I am an actor on the set. Nothing else apart from that. Anyway, all the veterans are associated with this film, I have learned a lot from them. What can I teach them. Working behind the camera is not easy. Hot sun, cold conditions happen and you have to look good in front of the camera.

How would you describe the experience with Sunny sir?

The experience with Sunny sir was great. As I saw him in childhood. They are the same even today. With him, I realized that he is a team player, junior artists should also play their part well. If he has to come only by walking, then also do that in the right way. They take full care of it. He has his own way of performing the scene. He will come and rehearse his scene in his mind. Will walk a little around the set and then perform it. The image of his action level is very big, so people often forget that the actor inside him is so great. When he does a film like Damini, you can see that. Even in Gadar, his non-action scenes , that is the highlight. Along with the action in Gadar 2, which are his non-action scenes. It is a pleasure working with such an artist. This makes you better as an actor as well.

Were you nervous while doing action scenes with Sunny sir?

When he can scare the enemy, he can fill his people with enthusiasm. It is everyone’s dream to do action scenes with Sunny sir. People used to come and say that we should make something in the film, just eat one punch of Sunny Sir’s hand. Action scenes in this film have been shot in a very realistic manner. An action shoot has taken place with a crowd of 5,000 people. Like happened in Gadar forest.

How popular did the success of Gadar make you in your school?

I didn’t tell anyone in school. Anyway, I was wearing a turban in the film. The hair was also shown long, so people could not recognize off screen. All were children of five-six years, so they could not recognize. Only my best friend knew. After I told him everyone. I have always preferred to stay away from attention.

Even after being a part of Gadar, why did you decide to become an actor only after working as an assistant director in Salman Khan’s film Veer?

It was a compulsion to cast me in Gadar, because no child was available. The shooting was on the head. Ameesha ji gave opinion and an EP also said the same. My parents had to take this decision under compulsion. He wanted me to focus on studies. This is the reason why despite the success of Gadar, my parents did not allow me to continue working as a child artist. I would like to tell that Gadar was shot very realistically. We shot continuously for 72 hours without any sleep in the scorching heat of May in Lucknow. Heat wave is going on in Rajasthan and I am running in the train. To be honest, it was a very shocking experience for a child. After that, hardly anyone would think of acting. Yes loved the movies. Loved watching films, when I assisted Salman Khan during Veer, I was in my growing years at that time. A time when you can choose what you want to do. While working with Salman sir, I felt that I should get into acting.

Many people also say that Gadar was a classic film, shouldn’t its sequel be made?

We were looking for a story for Gadar 2. It’s not like that. It just happened. Shaktimaan ji, who was also the writer of Gadar One, said that I have a story for Gadar 2. I will tell you just one line. After listening to the story, father told it to Sunny sir and then to ji and the film was finalized in just one line. We felt that we would be able to do justice to Gadar 2 with this story because this story can happen only with the characters of Gadar.

Are you open to working with a production house other than your father’s?

Yes definitely, but I would like to continue to be a part of Indian heartland films. For small town people, I think they need more entertainment. There is also a need to think that people in the city are also thinking about them.
