London. A research has revealed that if you eat your first meal of the day, your breakfast and dinner late at night, it can have serious consequences. This may cause risk of heart attack.
The study suggested eating the first meal of the day at 8 a.m. and dinner at 8 p.m. to avoid the risk of heart disease.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, causing 18.6 million annual deaths in 2019, of which about 7.9 deaths were attributable to diet, according to the Global Burden of Disease study. This means that diet plays a major role in the development and progression of these diseases.
The study, from the French research institute INRAE National Research Institute for Agriculture Food and Environment, showed that eating the first meal late in the day was associated with a higher risk of heart disease, with every hour of delay increasing the risk by 6 percent.
For example, a person who eats his first meal at 9 a.m. is 6 percent more likely to develop heart disease than someone who eats his first meal at 8 a.m.
When it comes to the last meal of the day, eating late (after 9 pm) compared to eating before 8 pm increases the risk of cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke by 28 percent, especially in women.
Finally, longer periods of nighttime fasting between the last meal of the day and the first meal of the next day are associated with a lower risk of cerebrovascular disease, supporting the idea of eating both the first and last meals of the day.
For the study published in Nature Communications, scientists used data from 103,389 participants to study the relationship between food intake patterns and heart disease.
The team has suggested that having breakfast and dinner on time can help prevent the risk of heart disease.
