“It’s right to make people comfortable and England have generally batted well over the last two years. However, there comes a point when your batting has cost you the biggest series, so you can’t send the same guys every week.
Vaughan then touched on the cases of wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, who is set to play his 100th Test match, and Ben Foakes, who has been a part of some serious partnerships in the series but both of whom have failed to score a big individual score in India Have failed to achieve.
“Jonny Bairstow will play his 100th Test in Dharamsala and I am happy about it. It is a great triumph of resilience and I believe that if you reach 99 matches you deserve your 100th match. However, you cannot avoid the fact that he may miss his 101st match.
‘I also look at the keeper, Ben Fox. He has done brilliantly in India, but I think his batting is still not in his favor. The last Test was a good example: he is great in partnership with a batsman, but struggles with the lower order.
“Overall, England as a batting unit need to be reminded that Test cricket is a two-innings game. He is consistently batting well in one and performing poorly in the other.
“In yesteryear, being ahead in the first innings would win you matches, but now teams are less afraid of chasing and can easily turn the match. Ultimately, the game is about winning and England are struggling to do that against the best teams.
