Aditya Chopra talks about Uday Chopra’s failed career and the issue of nepotism in Bollywood in Netflix’s latest docuseries The Romantics. Uday Chopra and Aditya Chopra are the sons of Yash Chopra, a famous filmmaker of Hindi cinema. While Aditya Chopra became a successful producer and director, Uday was neither successful in acting nor in production. Uday Chopra could only give hits like ‘Mohabbatein’, ‘Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’ and ‘Dhoom’.
Brother Uday’s flop career said Aditya Chopra
Aditya Chopra said, ‘One thing that people ignore is that if he is from a privileged family then he will definitely be successful. but it’s not like that. Not everyone is successful. I cannot explain this by mentioning other people. But I can explain with the example of my brother. My brother Uday is an actor, but he is not a very successful actor. He is the son of one of the biggest filmmakers and brother of a big filmmaker. Think from a big company like YRF, we launched so many new faces but could not make him (Uday Chopra) a star. Why can’t we do this for ourselves? All things have only one thing and that is that it is the audience who decides that I want to see this man on screen and no one else.
‘Being in a film family, it is easy to get a break, but…’
Aditya Chopra further said, ‘If you are born in a film family, then of course it becomes easier for you to get breaks in films or auditions. But it stops there.’ In this documentary, Uday Chopra also talks about his career and how hard he worked for his debut film ‘Mohabbatein’. Uday told that brother Aditya had told him that if you want to become an actor then you have to work on your dance. Gotta be a good dancer. Uday Chopra said it was all easy for him.
Uday Chopra made his acting debut with ‘Mohabbatein’. It was directed by Aditya Chopra, while Papa Yash Chopra was the producer. The film had many actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Shamita Shetty, Jimmy Shergill and Amitabh Bachchan. Uday Chopra further said, ‘When ‘Dhoom’ came, I was trying to become a mainstream actor. That’s why I should have taken Ali’s role as an example and should have done the same role in future also. I got many offers, but I turned them down. I was trying to enter and create a space that was not meant for me. When I started acting, I was very innocent and naive. I thought everybody would like me. Never thought that he would not like me.
Now Uday Chopra will not make a career in acting
Uday Chopra said that people always taunted him by calling him a ‘flop actor’ and a ‘product of nepotism’, which made him feel very bad. Aditya Chopra said that people always liked Uday doing comedy, but Uday did not want to do comedy. According to Aditya, later Uday himself realized that acting was not for him. On the other hand, when Uday Chopra was asked whether he will now return to acting, he said that he can do acting as a hobby. But now will not make a career in it. Uday Chopra was last seen in the 2013 film ‘Dhoom 3’.
