New York (Best Hindu News): Noted singer, actor and human rights activist Harry Belafonte passed away on Tuesday due to a heart attack. He was 96 years old. He was one of the most successful African-American pop singers and sang such famous songs as Island in the Sun, Mary’s Boy Child and the UK number one Day-O.
According to media reports, Belafonte debuted as an actor in the 1953 musical film John Murray Anderson’s Almanac, for which he won a Tony Award as a supporting actor.
He was soon called by Hollywood and landed his first lead role in Island in the Sun, where he starred alongside James Mason, Joan Fontaine, and Joan Collins. In 1957, she was described in Look magazine as the first black matinee idol in entertainment history, according to BBC News.
His achievements during that time were considered all the more remarkable because black actors at the time were usually cast in the roles of servants and laborers, but they made a successful mark by refusing to bow to those stereotypes. He continued making films well into his 80s, playing his final role in Spike Lee’s BlacKKlansman.
He has produced over 30 albums in his musical career, including works by Nana Mouskouri, Lina Horne and Miriam Makeba. Even Bob Dylan made his first appearance playing harmonica on Belafonte’s 1962 album, Midnight Special. Belafonte also campaigned against poverty, apartheid and AIDS in Africa and became an ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
