The 69th National Film Awards for the year 2021 were announced on Thursday. Hindi film ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ has won the National Award for Best Feature Film. While Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress award for her performance in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and Kriti Sanon for ‘Mimi’, South Indian superstar Allu Arjun won the Best Actor award for Telugu film ‘Pushpa: The Rise’. Got National Award. Filmmaker Ketan Mehta presided over the 11-member jury for the National Award-2021. The National Film Award for Best Director has been given to Nikhil Mahajan for the Marathi film ‘Godavari’. The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, also won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration. After this Agnihotri has released a video message. Agnihotri said that he dedicates these honors to the communities affected by terrorism, especially Kashmiri Hindus and also wherever any Indian is a victim of terrorism in the whole world.

It is not surprising that the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray is the recipient of the most National Film Awards. Renowned as an Indian filmmaker, Ray put Indian cinema on the map globally, earning respect internationally as well as domestically. He won two National Awards for his debut film ‘Pather Panchali’ and went on to win awards for the next 40 years, winning his last award for Best Screenplay in 1994 for Uttaran.

Of Satyajit Ray’s 35 National Awards, six are for Best Director, while the others are for Best Film, Screenplay, Editing and various other categories. His six Best Director wins is also a record, with his 1974 film Sonar Kela winning a record six National Awards at the time, including three for Ray – Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Feature Film in Bengali. Nine of his films won the Best Feature Film Award in Bengali, while six also won the Best Feature Film Award.

He also won the award for Best Children’s Film (for Joi Baba Felunath in 1978) and Best Documentary (for Inner Eye in 1972). Ray won many international awards at all major film festivals, but the two awards were not the Oscars and the BAFTAs. None of his films could ever secure an Oscar nomination. Three of his films were nominated for BAFTA Awards (all three from the Apu Trilogy) but none won.
Other Prominent National Award Winners
Among actors, Shabana Azmi has won five National Awards, while Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut have won four National Awards each. Yesudas won six awards for playback singing, but is second only to Satyajit Ray with 17 National Film Awards by filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Four of his wins are for Best Director, while the others include awards for Best Film, Screenplay and even Best Book on Cinema.
