November 12 was a big day for cinema lovers in India as Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 hit the silver screens. The fifth installment of YRF Spy Universe created a huge stir on social media before its release. On the first day, Tiger 3 took the biggest Bollywood opening ever during Diwali. According to initial estimates from Sacknilk, Tiger 3 has crossed Rs 40 crore earning on the first day. The action-thriller earned Rs 44.50 crore on its opening day. The total occupancy of the film was seen at 41.32 percent and the highest occupancy rate of 46.18 percent was recorded during the night show. Tiger 3 is the third installment of the Tiger franchise and is part of the YRF spy universe like War and Pathan. Apart from Salman and Katrina, the film also stars Emraan Hashmi as the main antagonist. It also has Shahrukh as Pathan and Hrithik Roshan as Kabir in a cameo role.

The film proved to be Salman’s biggest opener, beating Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat (42.30 crore) in 2019 and Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (40.35 crore) in 2015, which were also released on Diwali. Similarly for Katrina, Tiger 3 is her third biggest opener of 2018 after Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs of Hindostan (52.25 crore) and Bharat with Salman. Now big details have come out regarding the OTT release of the film.

While all the released films of the YRF spy universe are now available on Amazon Prime Video, it is more likely that the production house will continue the same pattern and release its upcoming film Tiger 3 on Amazon Prime Video. In the initial month of this year, Pathan released and later, it appeared on Amazon Prime Video. Tiger 3 will hit OTT three months after its theatrical release. Tiger 3 was released on the occasion of Diwali, hence the opening day collection was slightly less and it failed to break the records of both Shahrukh Khan’s movies Pathan and Jawan. Where Pathan, which was released in January, earned Rs 57 crore. Atlee’s Jawan had collected Rs 75 crores.
Why was Tiger 3 released only on Diwali?
Recently YRF has revealed the strategy behind releasing such a big film on Diwali. Rohan Malhotra, vice president of distribution at YRF, said, “It came to us for the simple reason that at the beginning of the year, we had a film like Pathan. If we had followed the traditional path, we would have released the film on Republic Day. Release it.” It worked like a dream. We had full faith in Zoya and Tiger and knew that Salman Khan’s fans were very excited to see them in action mode again.
