meeting bismil

During the non-cooperation movement, when Gandhiji withdrew the movement due to the Chaurichaura incident, Azad became disillusioned with Gandhiji. During this time he met Ram Prasad Bismil. This meeting with Bismil proved to be a major turning point in Azad’s life. After this, he became a revolutionary by becoming an active member of ‘Hindustan Republican Association’. Although the leadership of the party was in the hands of Bismil, Azad soon became the choice of all his colleagues, including Bhagat Singh, due to his clear and vigorous views.

This is how Chandrashekhar Tiwari got the name of Azad
In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested after joining the non-cooperation movement. During that time, when he was presented before the judge, his answer had shocked everyone. When he was asked his name, he told his name as Azad and his father’s name as Swatantrata. The judge became very angry with this and sentenced Chandrashekhar to 15 lashes.

kakori train incident
Hardly anyone would be unaware of the Kakori incident recorded in the pages of Indian history. In fact, during this period, ten members of the ‘Hindustan Republican Association’ (HRA) group had carried out the Kakori train robbery. Because at that time most of the money collected for revolutionary activities was done through looting of government property.

Azad believed that this looted wealth belonged to the Indians only, which the British government had forcibly looted by exploiting us. This incident was mainly carried out by Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandrashekhar Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan, Rajendra Lahiri and Manmathnath Gupta. Let us tell you that after this incident, the British government sentenced these brave revolutionaries including Ramprasad Bismil, Rajendranath Lahiri and Thakur Roshan Singh to death.

J.P. saunders murder
In 1928, during a protest against the Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai was badly injured in the lathi charge by the British government and died a few days later. After this, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru decided to avenge his death and Chandrashekhar Azad supported them. On December 17, 1928, these people killed Lahore (present day Pakistan) Superintendent of Police J.P. Saunders’ office was surrounded from all sides and Rajguru shot at Saunders, killing him.

When bomb was thrown in Delhi Assembly
After this, Bhagat Singh, influenced by the ‘Irish Revolution’, along with Chandrashekhar Azad, Rajguru and Sukhdev, thought of making some big blast against the British government. Then in the year 1929, Bhagat Singh, along with his colleague Batukeshwar Dutt, threw a bomb in the Assembly Hall of the British Government located at Alipore Road, Delhi. Along with this, he raised slogans of Inquilab Zindabad and distributed pamphlets, but he did not run away anywhere but was himself arrested. After this, Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were prosecuted, after which they were sentenced to death.

The last battle in Alfred Park
After these incidents, the British government used all its strength to arrest these revolutionaries. After this, almost all the members of the party were arrested, but still Chandrashekhar Azad continued to dodge the British government for a long time. That historic day of 27 February 1931 when ‘Azad’ along with his other comrades in Allahabad’s Alfred Park was planning the future against the British rule.

When the British got information about this from spies, they along with many British soldiers suddenly attacked them. But Azad chased away his comrades from there and started fighting the British alone. In this fight, Azad was badly injured by police bullets. They kept fighting for about 20 minutes in front of hundreds of policemen.

Chandrashekhar Azad had vowed that he would never be caught nor would the British government be able to hang him. Therefore, to fulfill his vow, he shot himself with the last bullet of his pistol and sacrificed his life for the motherland.
