‘Treasure store’ found again in India, 15 rare minerals used from car to phone found

Hyderabad: These days reserves of important minerals are being found in the country, due to which the strength of the whole country is getting stronger. Due to the availability of these rare minerals, the state is also getting rich and developing. In this episode, reserves of rare earth elements have been found in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, which are mostly used in daily use things ranging from cellphones, TVs and computers to automobiles.

These minerals have been discovered by the scientists of National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad. Actually, NGRI scientists were conducting surveys for non-conventional rocks like syenite. At the same time, he made important discoveries of minerals in the Lanthanide series. Identified elements include allanite, cerite, thorite, columbite, tantalite, apatite, zircon, monazite, pyrochlore uxenite, and fluorite.

NGRI scientist PV Sundar Raju said that zircons of different sizes were seen in Reddipalle and Peddavadaguru villages. They noted that the monazite grains showed multiple high-order colors along with radial cracks within the grains, indicating the presence of radioactive elements.

Scientist PV Sundar Raju told TOI that more feasibility studies would be done by deepdrilling to know more about these REEs. These elements are also used in clean energy, aerospace, defense and in the manufacture of permanent magnets – a key component of modern electronics – wind turbines, jet aircraft and many other products. REE are widely used in high technology because of their luminescent and catalytic properties. NGRI scientists said that evaluation of REE with implications for metallography is now underway in alkaline cyanite complexes in AP.

The scientists said that several alkaline cyanite deposits reported earlier by the Geological Survey of India were newly observed for REE-rich minerals. Dancherla, Peddavaduguru, Danduvaripalle, Reddipalle Chintalachervu and Pulikonda complexes in Anantapur and Chittoor districts are potential centers for these REE-rich minerals. The main Dencherla syenite body is oval in shape and has a total area of 18 sq km. A scientist said that three hundred samples were subjected to further geochemical studies to understand the potential for REE mineralization.
