New York. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bella Bajaria and actor, writer and producer Mindy Kaling have been named to The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘2023 Women in Entertainment Power 100’ list.
The two Indian-Americans along with several other female executives, artists and industry powerhouses were honored on Thursday as “women who set the bar for success in the changing cultural marketplace in 2023.”
Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and was named Netflix’s Chief Content Officer in January 2023 – a move that made her responsible for the streaming service’s TV and film output.
He is responsible for hit films including ‘Bridgerton’, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, ‘Lupin’ and ‘Cobra Kai’.
In his current role, Bajaria manages an annual content budget of $17 billion and oversees teams in 27 countries.
Over the past 12 months, she’s brought some of Netflix’s most popular titles to its 238 million members, including ‘The Night Agent’ and ‘Wednesday.’ ‘Wednesday’ is Netflix’s most-watched English-language original ever, contributing to the streamer’s three Emmy nominations.
Bajaria was recently ranked 67th in Forbes’ list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2023, along with US Vice President Kamala Harris and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Born in London and spending her formative years in Britain and Zambia, Bajaria moved to Los Angeles at the age of 8.
Before joining Netflix, Bajaria was president of Universal Television, where she made history as the first Black woman to oversee the studio.
He was also named in Time’s list of 100 Most Influential People in 2022.
Kaling began her professional career as a trainee on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”, after which she began writing and acting on several sketch comedy shows, including “Matt & Ben”.
She was hired as a writer and cast member on the hit television show ‘The Office’ in 2004, and created and starred in her own television show, ‘The Mindy Project’, which premiered in 2012.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is the producer of ‘Secret Lives of College Girls’ and is continuously writing for it.
On the acting front, Kaling voiced Velma in Max’s controversial but renewed animated Scooby-Doo series of the same name. She continues to be seen in ‘The Morning Show’.
Earlier this year, President Joe Biden honored her with the prestigious National Medal of Arts, one of the highest awards given to artists and art patrons by the US government.
