A new stage adaptation of the ancient Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’ is in the works. It is all set to make its UK premiere at the Barbican Theater in London. A retelling of the revered text, which follows a devastating family feud.
A new stage adaptation of the ancient Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’ is in the works. It is all set to make its UK premiere at the Barbican Theater in London. The retelling of the revered text, which follows a devastating family feud and explores deep philosophical and spiritual ideas, is from Canada’s Why Not Theater and had its world premiere at The Shaw Festival Theater in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada in March.
The production is presented in two parts and narrated by a storyteller (Mariyam Fernandes). “Karma” (Part 1), is the origin story of the rival Pandava and Kaurava clans. In “Religion” (Part 2), a great war destroys the planet and the survivors are left to rebuild.
“Mahabharata” is performed by a company from four continents, all of the South Asian diaspora. The cast includes UK-based artists Ajay Chhabra (“Rough Diamonds,” Netflix), Neil D’Souza (“How to Hold Your Breath,” Royal Court), Darren Kuppen (“Let the Right One In,” Manchester Royal Exchange), Goldie Notte (“Life of Pi,” UK Tour) and Sakuntala Ramani (“Life of Pi,” West End), with Canadian and other international artists Shawn Ahmed, J Emmanuel, Fernandes, Navtej Sandhu, Anaka Maharaj are included. The adaptation is by Why Not Theatre’s founding artistic director Ravi Jain, who also directs, and co-artistic director Fernandes using Carol Satyamurthy’s poem “Mahabharata: A Modern Retelling”.
The original concept was developed with Jenny Koons. Set Design by Lorenzo Savoini, Costume Design by Gillian Gallo, Lighting Design by Kevin Lamothe, Projection by Hana S. Kim, Sound Design by John Gazowski and Suba Sankaran, Original Music by John Gazowski and Shankaran, with contributions from Dylan Bell, Gurtej Singh Hunjan, Zaheer-Abbas Janmohammed and Hashil Lodhia, and Choreography by Brandy Leary with Jay Emmanuel and Alora Patnaik with contribution.
The main producers are Michelle Yagi and Kevin Matthew Wong, the production manager is Crystal Lee. Viewers can watch the stage adaptation of ‘Mahabharat’ from 1st October to 7th October.
