US Open 2023: Alcaraz and Medvedev in the semi-finals of the US Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz and third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia cruised into straight-sets victories despite inclement weather conditions to set up a US Open semi-final clash. The defending champion Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. He is now inching closer to his second consecutive title at the US Open.

Roger Federer won five consecutive titles here from 2004 to 2008. After this, no player could defend his title in men’s singles. Earlier in the scorching heat, Medvedev defeated compatriot Andre Rublev to reach the men’s singles semi-finals of the US Open for the fourth time. The temperature at Flushing Meadows touched 35 degrees Celsius and it was not easy to play. Medvedev used an ‘inhaler’ during the match and also took the help of a doctor.

However, he managed to beat Rublev 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Medvedev warned after the match that the players might have to go through severe problems due to the high heat. He said, “Such circumstances that you cannot even imagine. In such a situation, a player’s life can also be lost. I don’t know what we can do in such circumstances because maybe we can’t stop the tournament for four days. But the conditions are dangerous.

If Alcaraz wins the semifinals, he could face Novak Djokovic, whom he defeated in the Wimbledon title match, in the final. Djokovic will face 20-year-old Ben Shelton of America in the other semi-final. Shelton has reached the last four of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. In women’s singles, Aryna Sabalenka defeated 23rd seed Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 6-4 to reach her fifth straight Grand Slam semi-final.

Second seed Sabalenka will replace Inga Swiatek as world number one in the WTA rankings to be released next week. Belarus’ Sabalenka will face American Madison Keys, who beat defending Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-4, in the semi-finals. In the other women’s semi-final, sixth seed Coco Gauff will face 10th seed Karolina Muchova.
