Valentine’s Day begins in India
There is an interesting story related to Valentine’s Day in India. Born in England, Mogar Monk was a Latin language teacher at John Mackennon’s school in Barloganj, Mussoorie. He was in love with Elizabeth Luin. Mauger Monk thought of expressing his love on Valentine’s Day and on 14 February 1843 sent a letter from Mussoorie to England addressed to his sister Margaret Monk. In the letter he told how much he loved Luin. He had written that dear sister, I am writing this letter on Valentine’s Day. He wrote in the letter, I want to tell you that I have fallen in love with Elizabeth Luin, I am very happy with her.
Mogar Mank died in the year 1849. Historians say that at that time he was living in Meerut. The letters written by him came to light after 150 years, when Mogar Mank’s relative Andrew Morgan mentioned the letters written between 1828 and 1849 in the book Mussoorie Merchant Indian Letters. There is no previous record available in which Valentine’s Day is mentioned.
